Chapter 4 ~ 1994
Why do you stare at the sky with your blurry eyes?
As 1994 began, so did L'Arc's career as a major label act. For reasons unknown, tetsu decided Sony would be the best choice for a major label. L'Arc~en~Ciel found themselves on the Ki/oon division of Sony and have remained there ever since. Now, proudly on a major label, they made a quick 3 stop tour called "NOSTALGIA no yokan", as sort of a wrap-up to their indies period. They played mostly their old songs (including "With Silence" still), but also started trying out songs like White Feathers, Blame, and nemuri ni yosete. After this tour, however, they were a major label band through and through.
Along with their status, their music now took a different approach as well. The "band sound" of their first album was played down, and they began utilizing their new musical freedom. Acoustic guitars, synthesizers, various percussion and such were all used abundantly as they started creating music on Ki/oon, giving the music a much more atmospheric sound than before. Their look became ever more majestic as well.
Fans' first glimpse of the "new" L'Arc~en~Ciel came in the form of the video single released 7/1, "nemuri ni yosete". The band was going for a more "beautiful" look now, rather than shocking visual, and the music was similar. Shortly thereafter, "Tierra" was released - the band's second full album.
To promote their new album, they started their "Sense of Time '94" tour, playing only 8 stops, starting on the day "Tierra" was released. While the band always played many songs from their new album, they still relied on playing indies songs to fill in the gaps. They may be on a major label now, but they remembered their roots.
After the short tour, it was off to Morocco. There, they would be a shooting a video called "Siesta ~Film of Dreams~". This is a very artsy type video, having a segment for each member. It's quite different and not really all that sensical as to why they did it, but nonetheless, they did have a PV for "kaze no yukue" at the end. The video was released December 1st.
Meanwhile, their popularity throughout Japan was budding. The biggest hit off of "Tierra" was clearly the fifth track, "Blurry Eyes". It was used as an anime theme for D.N.A.2, and later recut as a single with a "Wind of Gold" remix as the c/w on October 21st. This had so far been the best means of getting L'Arc~en~Ciel's name out in the public, and it was because of this song that many found out about them. "Blurry Eyes" became sort of a classic song for them and is still played at concerts today.
Before the year's end, their official fanclub "Ciel" finally started up on December 1st. 1994 came to a close with aspirations and expectations high.
